A Little Less Looking Sideways...
Do you ever feel as though everything has become a competition?
Who is doing more. Who is further ahead. Who has the bigger audience, the fuller diary, the newest opportunity, the most impressive announcement.
Sometimes even the things that are supposed to bring us closer to ourselves can start to feel strangely noisy.
I notice it in mediumship, of course, because that is the world I work in. But I suspect it reaches far beyond that. Social media has a way of placing everybody else's life, work, success, opinions and momentum directly in front of us, often before we've even had time to consider what we actually want for ourselves. And I wonder how often we get pulled into looking sideways without even realising it.
There are times in this work when I feel the need to come back to the simplest part of it all: sitting with Spirit. Not teaching. Not organising. Not promoting. Not watching what everyone else is doing. Just becoming still enough to reconnect with the reason I began in the first place.
For me as for many, sitting with Spirit has always been the place where things begin to settle. It reminds me that I don't need to keep pace with anybody else. I don't need every opportunity. I don't need to respond to every opinion or measure what I'm doing against someone else's path. I just need to stay connected to what feels true, useful and purposeful for me. Perhaps you have your own version of that. A walk. A garden (the first signs of Spring are showing up in my garden and all my friends are obliged to ooh and ahhh when the peonies come in). Meditation. Prayer. Music. Sitting somewhere quietly with a cup of tea and no phone in your hand. Whatever it is, I think we all need somewhere we can hear ourselves again. And that is very much where I find myself at the moment.
My next opportunity to put that into practice will be at the Mill Theatre on Friday 21 August for another From the Rooftops: An Evening with Spirit.
These evenings have become very special to me because they strip everything back to the work itself. Walk onto the platform, put the rest of the world aside and trust the communication. The evidence. The story of the communicator. The recognition from the recipient. The reminder that life is so much more than what we see in front of us.
That is still why I want to stand on a platform and demonstrate mediumship. Not because I think I have something to prove, but because I still believe the message is worth sharing.
Life is eternal.
And occasionally I still feel like shouting that from the rooftops.
There are other things coming up too, including supporting the Canberra Spiritualist Association's Festival of Spirit fundraiser on 30 August, returning to Spiritual Church Brisbane in October, heading back to Auckland, and then teaching The Unfolding Medium in Newcastle with Denise Litchfield DSA.
But I don't want this newsletter to become another list of where I'm going next. Because that isn't really the point. The point is still the work itself.
To sit with Spirit. To keep learning. To demonstrate. To teach what I believe in. To meet people along the way and hopefully leave something useful behind. And perhaps this is something you recognise too. That quiet sense that you don't actually want to win whatever competition everyone seems to be taking part in. You just want to know that the life you are living, the work you are doing and the choices you are making still feel like yours.
Sometimes I think the only way to hear that answer is to stop looking sideways for a while.
Go within.
Listen.
And then get on with the work that is yours to do.
